Located on the east coast of Queensland, about midway between the top of Cape York and Brisbane, is the informal capital of North Queensland, Townsville.

With the Great Barrier Reef outside, and popular attractions like The Strand, consisting of a lengthy garden strip and beach; a riverfront reserve situated on the banks of the Ross River; the Museum of Tropical Queensland which was built to showcase an exhibition of ruins of the ‘HMS Pandora,’ a British warship; Reef HQ, comprising a big tropical aquarium with numerous native fauna and flora from the Great Barrier Reef; and Magnetic Island which is only 25 minutes from Townsville’s CBD.

Considered the island playground of Townsville, Magnetic Island is two thirds National Park with sheltered bays and golden beaches. Having approximately 25 kilometres of walking trails that meander through the protected parkland, you have the chance to witness 166 different species of wildlife with over 2,500 free-roaming koalas.

Even though Captain James Cook sailed past the region of Townsville in 1770, he named Magnetic Island, and Cleveland Bay. The first Europeans to record a local landing were Alan Cunningham the botanist, and Captain Phillip Parker King.

The first white man in the region to live among the Bindal Aboriginal people was James Morrill who was shipwrecked from the ‘Peruvian.’ in 1846. He was discovered by other white settlers 17 years later and taken to Brisbane.

Townsville was named after Robert Towns, a Sydney businessman who provided finance for a party of explorers to examine and establish a suitable site below the spur of Melton Hill, which is near the current Customs House on The Strand.

Townsville was acknowledged as a metropolis in February 1866, and John Melton Black, one of the initial explorers, was elected Mayor.

With the discovery of the Charters Towers and Etheridge goldfields, Townsville advanced rapidly as a key service centre and port. In 1902, in conjunction with Brisbane, Townsville was declared a city under the Local Authorities Act.

During World War II in 1942, three minor air raids were made by the Japanese against Townsville. At that stage, the city was the most important air base in Australia. There were no lives lost and minimal structural damage. Apparently, a few 500 pound bombs were dropped in the harbour, at Oonoonba, and close to the Garbutt airfield.
